Untold Stories from the "Mark Twain of American Songwriting" by Rolling Stone Magazine Posted on 04 Jan 13:04 , 0 commentsJohn spent some time with Rolling Stone this last summer telling untold stories from his past, and how he is influencing a younger generation these days .
His songs have become a key reference point for young Americana stars like Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell and Margo Price, all of whom open for Prine. "We hold him up as our Hank Williams," says Todd Snider, who has released music on Oh Boy. "His music is like Huckleberry Finn. You get it, then you listen to it five years later and you really get it. And you listen to it five years later and you go, 'I get it!' And then 10 years later you go, 'Now I get it.'"Read the entire article on Rolling Stone HERE.
John, Jason Isbell & Kacey Musgraves Talk Songwriting Before Their New Year's Show at The Grand Old Opry Posted on 22 Dec 11:16 , 0 commentsAhead of their New Year's Eve show at the Grand Old Opry, John Prine, Jason Isbell and Kacey Musgraves sat down with the Nashville Scene to have a chat about songwriting and their own unique style. "One thing that’s really influenced me about John’s songwriting is the ability to keep things very conversational. As a writer, the hardest thing to accomplish in a song is making it so simple but so beautiful and poignant at the same time. I just love that he always says things in the same manner that you would say to somebody in a conversation. It’s not built up to be some gigantic poetic, regarded statement, it’s just exactly how it should be. I admire that.." - Kacey Musgraves Read the rest of the Nashville Scene article HERE.

'I'm not writing poetry, I'm writing lyrics' - Interview with The Guardian Posted on 10 Nov 16:52 , 0 commentsJohn recently chatted with The Guardian for his new record 'For Better, or Worse' and touched on the way he writes a song and the theme for the next record.
"If I wanted to be a poet, I’d write poetry. I know what poetry is. I’m not writing poetry, I’m writing song lyrics. Whatever the subject is, I’m trying to write as well about that subject as I possibly can but still within the confines of a song. I’m not trying to put my words down as a poem set to music. To me, that’s a different thing,” he says. “But I like the idea of it being accepted."Read the rest of the article with The Guardian HERE.
